Tenebre – Nicole Strecker, Kölner Stadt-Anzeiger

“Hubert Essakow is working with the Ballett am Rhein for the first time. Evidently he has been drawn most to the company’s talent for sinister and sensual ballet performances: some form of desire for pain drives the dancers on his stage. One woman is carried by a group of dancers using nothing but their hands and her half writhing half thrashing leaves it open to interpretations whether she is a princess of darkness in an occult ceremony or a poor victim being roasted in the fires of hell. ‘Tenebre’, i.e. darkness, is the title of this fascinatingly atmospheric ballet, in which thanks to the sophisticated lighting design a single body is visible far too briefly before the dancers vanish back into the darkness. Very effective, though also slightly morbid and decorative gothic chic.”
